Winemaker's Notes

Our 2016 Sandstone Merlot has inviting notes of ripe fig and pomegranate, with a hint of sandalwood. This delicious Merlot bursts with berry flavors from cranberry, grilled cherry and acai, finishing with a nice lingering acidity

John's Notes

I enjoyed the Wente Sandstone Merlot 2016 on Sunday night while looking back on a weekend that was both relaxing and productive.  Good stuff on a number of fronts

On the nose, medium intensity notes of red and black cherry, blackberry, and purple plum couple with toasty oak and cinnamon. The palate is very smooth and similarly pleasing with juicy, perfectly ripe primary fruits including red cherry, raspberry, and purple plum supported by vanilla, charred wood, cinnamon, and just a hint of fennel that all come together for a long finish.  Well done and quite enjoyable

Nerdy Details

Winemaker: Wente Vineyards, winemaker Karl D. Wente

  • Wente Vineyards is the country’s oldest, continuously operated family-owned winery, founded in 1883
  • Blending traditional and innovative winemaking practices, the winery draws from nearly 3,000 acres of certified sustainably farmed vineyards to create an outstanding portfolio of estate grown wines

Variety:  78% Merlot, 15% Petite Sirah, 7% Malbec

Region:  Livermore Valley, California

Climate:  Like most of California’s wine regions, Livermore Valley’s climate is influenced by cool  air and fog drawn in at night from the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay. This fog often takes several hours to burn off in the morning, which extends the cooling influence well into the day

  • Our Estate Grown Sandstone Merlot comes from a gently sloping formation of hills running along the southeastern corner of the historic Livermore Valley
  • With warm days, cool nights, well-drained sandstone soils, and incoming breezes from the San Francisco Bay, the Wente family’s hillside vineyard is an ideal place to grow outstanding Merlot and Bordeaux varieties

  • Varietals were fermented separately in upright stainless-steel fermenters and pumped over 2-3 times daily
  • Wine was pressed on the skins after 7-12 days
  • Aged for 24 months in French, Eastern European and neutral oak barrels

Alcohol: 13.5%

Pairs Well With:  BBQ chicken pizza, margherita pizza and lasagna

Wine Enthusiast (90):  This nicely concentrated wine offers plenty of blackberry and black cherry interlaced with oak spices that add vanilla and cinnamon nuances. It’s rich and velvety in texture
