Winemaker's Notes

Our 2019 Sandstone Merlot has inviting notes of dark and red fruits, such as blackberry and pomegranate, with a hint of sandalwood. This wonderful Merlot delivers flavors of black cherry and fresh fig on the palate, finishing with a nice lingering acidity and long finish

John's Notes

After the excellent feedback I received about the 2018 vintage, I had to grab some of the 2019 as soon as it became available.  With 78% Merlot as the backbone, the supporting grapes differ slightly from the 2018 – a bit less Petite Sirah, a bit more Malbec, plus a touch of Cab Sauv and Petit Verdot for added complexity and balance

Nerdy Details

Winemaker:  Wente Vineyards, winemaker Karl D. Wente

  • Wente Vineyards is the country’s oldest, continuously operated family-owned winery, founded in 1883
  • Wente’s estate grown wines are named after the unique growing conditions of the vineyards in which they are sourced

Variety:  78% Merlot, 11% Petite Sirah, 7% Malbec, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Tempranillo, 1% Petit Verdot

Region: Livermore Valley, California

  • Like many of California’s wine regions, Livermore Valley’s climate is influenced by cool air and fog drawn in at night from the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay. This fog often takes several hours to burn off in the morning, which extends the cooling influence well into the day

  • Blending traditional and innovative winemaking practices, the winery draws from nearly 3,000 acres of certified sustainably farmed vineyards to create an outstanding portfolio of estate grown wines
  • With warm days, cool nights, well-drained sandstone soils, and incoming fog and breezes from the San Francisco Bay, our family’s hillside vineyards are ideal for growing outstanding Merlot
  • Harvest dates: 10/01/19 – 11/09/19

  • Varietals were fermented separately in upright stainless steel fermenters and pumped over 2-3 times daily
  • Wine was pressed on the skins after 7-12 days
  • The wine was aged for 19 months in French and American oak barrels
  • Release Date: March 2021

Alcohol:  13.5%

pH:  3.70
