Description

A bright straw yellow with pale green reflections, on the nose it offers notes of ripe pears and golden apples, evolving in the glass with delicate hints of hay and almonds. On the palate it is dry and well-balanced, with a particularly fresh, tangy finish

Variety: Pinot Grigio
Region: Veneto, Italy
Winemaker: Tommasi Viticoltori
Size: 750 ml
Alcohol: 12.0%

Winemaker's Notes

Moon yellow color. Clean and spicy perfume, with typical hints of tropical fruit. Medium-bodied with a clean, round and soft taste and a crisp finish

John's Notes

Notes of Bartlett pear, green apple, and lime greet the nose along with more subtle notes of white pepper, passionfruit, and spring flowers. The palate offers the same fruit experience as the nose, and is augmented by yellow peach, almonds, and energetic acidity.  This wine’s liveliness and just-right balance of fruit and acidity were the “secret sauce” for me on this wine

Nerdy Details

Winemaker: Tommasi Viticoltori, winemaker Giancarlo Tommasi

  • Established in 1902 around the family home in Pedemonte in Valpolicella, the winery has grown and expanded into the choicest areas of the region under the guidance of the many generations of the Tommasi family
  • The winery is known above all for its classic approach to winemaking in Valpolicella, favoring elegance and balance, and paying homage to the winemaking tradition of their home region
  • This Valpolicella Pinot Grigio can be described as sitting between the richer, more concentrated Pinot Grigio from Friuli to the north, and racier styles from the Veneto at large

Variety: 100% Pinot Grigio

Region:  Valpolicella, Veneto, Italy

Climate/Vintage:

  • Located in the foothills of the Alps, Veneto’s vineyards are sheltered from the rain and winds
  • Veneto has a warm continental climate with an average growing temperature of 65 – 70°F as moderated by the cooling influence from altitude and Lake Garda

Viticulture/Winemaking:

  • The Tommasi family owns vineyards on the most prestigious hills of the Valpolicella region, and they work only with grapes they grow, an important quality decision and reflection of their deep connection to the Valpolicella soil
  • Tommasi’s Pinot Grigio is grown at the Prunea estate in the Sant’Ambrogio valley of Valpolicella Classico, acquired by the Tommasi family in 1997
  • Le Rosse is one of the four main sub-plots of this vineyard and is planted entirely to Pinot Grigio grapes
  • The vineyard rows are planted extremely close together and receive intense pruning, resulting in low yields and excellent richness
  • All grapes are harvested at night, to retain maximum freshness and acidity
  • The wine is fermented entirely in stainless steel tanks, where it remains for 4 months

Alcohol: 12.0%

Pairs Well With: Pan seared flounder with parmesan, chicken thighs, Gorgonzola cheese

Reviews

Wine Enthusiast (85): This simple white has a shy nose offering whiffs of spring flowers and white stone fruit. It’s bright and informal, offering suggestions of green apple and citrus alongside brisk acidity. Kerin O’Keefe 10/1/2020
