Winemaker's Notes

The 2018 Taken Red Blend is a careful balancing act of light and dark. At first glance, the nose is dominated by ripe notes of raspberry, blackberry, black currant, and plum, but careful consideration reveals soft, floral undertones. Delicate hints of jasmine and vanilla bean elevate the palate while the body is defined by flavors of quince, roasted fig, and extra dark chocolate with a dash of allspice. The texture is full and robust, but gives way to rich, supple tannins on the finish

John's Notes

What do you do when can’t get any more of the 2017 vintage of one of your best sellers? You guessed it – you bring in the 2018 as soon as it becomes available.  That’s what we’ve done with Taken Wine Company’s Red Blend, which just arrived on Tuesday’s delivery truck.  A slightly different composition of grapes than last year – can’t wait to try it!

Nerdy Details

Winemaker: Taken Wine Company, winemaker Rebecca Jain

  • Longtime friends and from wine growing families, Carlo Trinchero and Josh Phelps decided to start their own wine making venture in 2010. As they thought of names and searched them for trademarks everything they liked was taken, so that’s what they decided to call their business, Taken Wine Company
  • Taken Wine Company was created with a simple philosophy: to craft great wines to share with friends. The circle represents the path we have Taken from vineyard to glass

Variety:  65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Zinfandel, 11% Merlot, 7% Malbec, 2% Petit Syrah

Region: Napa Valley, California

  • The Vaca Mountains run along the eastern side of Napa Valley, while the Mayacamas Mountains run along the west and form a boundary with Sonoma County. Accordingly, Napa County has a range of climates and is subject to cooling influences including morning fogs, afternoon breezes, and of course, various altitudes

  • In a corner of the world steeped in heritage, yet unrestrained by convention, we craft our wine entirely from Napa Valley fruit. We view this traditional region through a decidedly of-the-moment lens, capturing the unmatched terroir of Napa as an ever-evolving narrative. A story of flavor, complexity and depth
  • The wine is aged 4 months in 25% new oak (86% French, 7% American, 7% Hungarian)
  • pH: 3.79

Alcohol:  14.3%

Pairs Well With: Burgers on the grill, pepperoni and sausage pizza, lasagna

James Suckling (91): Currants, berries and blue fruit, as well as nuts, following through to a full body with dusty tannins and a savory finish. Currants and wet earth in the aftertaste. Drink or hold
