Winemaker's Notes

Our Estate Cabernet Sauvignon can be called Padrone’s favorite son. It inherited Padrone’s intense varietal aromas and concentrated flavor. Yet, because the grapes are sourced from several of our younger less rocky parcels with a variety of exposures, clones, and soil types, it enjoys a softer tannin structure. This wine boasts full flavors that are intended to be enjoyed over the next 20 years

John's Notes

Signorello Estate’s reputation for crafting outstanding wine is well documented as evidenced by its outstanding reviews year in and year out as well as designation of this vintage as “collectable”

I was having a few Dancing Gnome IPAs with friends the other night, and someone asked where I got the wood box that you see in all of the wine pictures – a fun question on a night where I was too tired to think about vintage, varietal, climate, etc. Any guesses?  After experimenting with almost a dozen different backdrops that looked somewhere between awful and dreadful, I “borrowed” this antique box from the dining room at home and took it to WineJug the next morning.  It’s a little beat up, kind of clunky, and too small for the tall Rieslings – far from perfect, but it suits me in many ways

BTW, Dancing Gnome may be the best IPA craft brewery anywhere. Check it out if you get a chance

Nerdy Details

Winemaker:  Signorello Estate

  • Our wines are an expression of our land. Each of them embodies a specific character, reflecting the nuances that define our estate.  As singular as a fingerprint, our terroir is paramount to the traditions we honor
  • Signorello Estate’s winery, on Napa’s Silverado Trail, was one of the wineries that was tragically reduced to rubble by the 2017 wildfires

Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon (87%), Cabernet Franc (7%), Merlot (6%)

Region: Napa Valley, California

  • The Vaca Mountains run along the eastern side of Napa Valley, while the Mayacamas Mountains run along the west and form a boundary with Sonoma County. Accordingly, Napa County has a range of climates and is subject to cooling influences including morning fogs, afternoon breezes, and various altitudes
  • 2014 was another early and excellent harvest in the Napa Valley. The 2013/2014 winter was one of the driest on record in California and rainfall totals in the Napa Valley were approximately half of normal. However, the timing could not have been better: heavy rains in late February and early March gave a much-needed drink of water to the vines as they were emerging from dormancy and about to begin bud break
  • An even fruit set created abundant yields; the third large harvest in a row with amazing quality and depth of flavor

  • The vines for our Cabernet Sauvignon were planted in 1990 on the Napa Valley hillsides along the Silverado Trail. These stunning hillsides provide a variety of exposures allowing us to create wines with increased complexity

  • Our fruit was triple sorted before de-stemming
  • Following traditional practices this wine was fermented using native yeasts at 90°F in stainless steel tanks and pumped over twice daily
  • This wine was gently pressed at zero brix and aged for 19 months in 80% new oak from Troncais, Nevers and Alliers and coopered into thin-staved, medium-plus toast Chateau Ferre barrels by coopers Tarransaud, Saury, Darnajou and Nadalie
  • To preserve fruit intensity and body, the wine was not fined or filtered prior to bottling

Alcohol: 14.7%

Pairs Well With:

  • Braised short ribs, beef cheek tagliatelle, grilled steak

Wine Spectrum (94): Signorello’s 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is super expressive, even though it was just bottled a month ago. Rose petal, mint, lavender, plum and succulent red cherry and tobacco all lift from the glass. Deep, dense and layered, the 2014 exudes class and finesse. The change towards a more understated style here is evident. The 80% new oak is nicely integrated.

Jeb Dunnuck (92): The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot, aged 19 months in 80% new French oak. This Bordeaux look-alike offers lots of ripe raspberry and blackcurrant fruits, leafy herbs, cedar, and floral/Herbes de Provence-like notes to go with a supple, rounded, sexy profile on the palate. It shows the elegant, charming style of the vintage, has no hard edges, and offers sweet tannins. Drink it anytime over the coming 10-15 years

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (90): In 2014 the yields were slightly higher than in 2015, and his 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate shows flattering, front-end loaded and pretty red and black fruits, a dense, dark ruby/purple-tinged color, medium to full body, sweet tannin and a rather Bordeaux-like lushness and elegance. Drink it over the next 15 or so years
