Winemaker's Notes

This Sauvignon Blanc is pale yellow with silver highlights. The nose is of passion fruit and guava blended with citrus and tropical fruits such as lime, grapefruit, and bananas supplemented with soft floral notes and mineral touches.  The palate is elegant, with good acidity, great volume, and lingering persistence

Aging potential: 3 years in bottle

John's Notes

Unmistakably Sauv Blanc on the nose with notes of lime, lemon zest, grapefruit, and cut grass, the Sierra Batuco is not as intense or acidic as a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, but through the use of oak, adds more body and a spicy complexity to the primary citrus notes (lemon, lime, grapefruit), hints of white peach, and refreshing minerality. The spicy green vegetal finish is both protracted and enjoyable

With these hot summer temperatures, I’ve been featuring a lot of white wine, but there are times where I really want a good Red especially when having pasta with tomato sauce or steak for dinner. When looking back at my favorite Reds, a few really stood out

  • Taken Red Blend 2017 ($30.99)
  • Amayna Syrah 2011 ($29.99)
  • Mercer Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 ($19.99)

Nerdy Details

Winemaker:  Sierra Batuco

  • Sierra Batuco is a pioneer in the newly discovered viticultural zone of the Maule Valley Coastal Mountains. Our wines reflect the freshness of the climate and the concentration of slowly matured grapes
  • In our Reserva range, you will find full-bodied, oak-aged wines with structure, concentration, and exciting complexity

Variety:  100% Sauvignon Blanc

Region: Valle Del Maule, Chile

Climate:  Maule is at the southern end of Chile’s Central Valley, and has a warm and dry Mediterranean climate with rainy winters and long, dry summers moderated by the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean. As such, the vineyard experiences warm days with cool afternoon sea breezes and cold nights

  • The vineyard is situated in Maule’s coastal mountain range roughly 40km from the ocean at an altitude 200 – 250 meters
  • Soils are deep alluvial clay and sand, with low to medium fertility
  • The grapes were manually harvested using 10 kg baskets, selecting the best bunches in order to use the highest quality grapes

  • The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks between 27 – 30°C (81 – 86°F) with post-fermentation maceration for up to another 10 days
  • The wines were aged for 8 months in a mix of new and used barrels acquiring remarkable complexity of flavors and aromas

Alcohol: 12.5%

Pairs Well With: Lightly seasoned seafood, herb-roasted chicken, soft cheeses

Wine Enthusiast (86):  Prickly aromas of green fruits, lemongrass and green herbs are backed by a zesty, lean and citric palate. Equally lean and direct lime and tangerine flavors end with a fresh vegetal note of celery.  Michael Schachner 12/31/19
