Winemaker's Notes

The wine opens with stone fruit and floral aromas on the nose. Juicy mandarin orange and wild honeysuckle notes develop with every sip. Our Auslese Riesling evolves with well-balanced minerality and a soft, lingering finish

John's Notes

In addition to its pronounced aromatics, one of the great things about Riesling is that it can be made in a variety of styles from completely dry to lusciously sweet like this one

When you see “Auslese” (a measure of must weight or ripeness) on the label, the winemaker is telling you that regardless of whether the wine is dry or sweet, it is made from individually selected, extra-ripe grapes, with riper and more concentrated flavors than Spatlese, and very often with notes of honey balanced by high acidity.   These wines are typically sweeter than Spatlese

Nerdy Details

Winemaker: Schmitt Sohne Family Wines, winemaker Juliane Schmitt

  • Over 200 years ago the Schmitt ancestors settled in the small village of Longuich, located along the Mosel River, and began managing vineyards and producing wine. We feel very attached to our family’s long tradition in this business
  • In 1919, Hilar Schmitt, the great-grandfather of today’s owners, founded the company as a small regional winery
  • Now in the 5th generation, Schmitt Söhne is one of Germany’s largest and most successful wine exporters to wine drinkers all over the world, and has become the #1 selling imported German Riesling brand in the US

Variety:  Riesling

Region: Mosel, Germany

  • Mosel has a cool continental climate with an average growing season temperature of 62°F or below, and large temperature swings from one season to the next
  • Autumn generally brings less rain which creates a long, cool ripening period that allows the grapes to reach sugar ripeness while retaining their bright acidity

  • Schmitt Sohne Family Wines Auslese Riesling hails from select vineyards along the Mosel River in Germany. The Mosel is regarded as the oldest wine-growing region in Germany, believed to have been established by the Romans around 50 AD. It is one of the most northerly wine regions in world. Mosel vineyards are famous for their steep south-facing slopes and blue slate soil
  • Grapes for the Riesling Auslese (“selected harvest” in German) wines are made from grapes that remain on the vine until extremely late in the year – as late as December
  • During picking, the grapes are handled very carefully to avoid bruising, letting the natural sweetness shine through
  • Harvested in the cool early morning, the grapes are brought quickly to the winery, destemmed and placed in stainless steel tanks that help retain our Riesling’s crisp acidity
  • The wine is kept cool, between 50-65 degrees, during fermentation
