Variety: Chianti Classico DOCG
Region: Chianti, Italy
Winemaker: Rocca delle Macie
Size: 750 ml
Alcohol: 13.5%

Winemaker's Notes

Lively ruby red. Intense and persistent with hints of wild berries that combine well with the aromas released by the wood of the barrels. Savory and full bodied, it highlights the exceptional persistence of the bouquet

John's Notes

The appearance is bright ruby with a touch of garnet or burnt orange on the meniscus, which ordinarily would suggest a little age ….. unless it’s a Chianti – don’t let this one trick you

On the nose, plenty of young primary red fruit including strawberry, red cherry, and cranberry confidently escape from the glass complimented by toasted almond, black tea, and black pepper

Very much in line with expectation, youth leads the elegant (M body) palate with sour red cherry, cranberry, and red raspberry, but the acidity is nicely balanced by roasted almonds, cocoa nibs, black pepper, and maybe a quick puff of tobacco. Enjoyable especially with food.  Make sure to decant for 30 minutes or more given its youth

Also, the producer advises that this wine is Vegan Friendly and Gluten Free

Nerdy Details

Winemaker: Rocca delle Macìe, winemaker Luca Francioni

  • For well over 40 years the Zingarelli family has dedicated themselves to Tuscany’s Rocca delle Macìe, crafting the finest wines, providing meticulous attention to the vineyards, and championing Chianti Classico DOC
  • One of the most successful producers of Chianti Classico in the world, Rocca delle Macìe is a family-owned winery with family values
  • Rocca delle Macìe is one of the few Tuscan wineries with a DOCG at the very top of their quality pyramid

Variety: 95% Sangiovese, 5% Merlot

Region: Chianti, Italy

  • When you see “Classico” on a bottle of Italian wine, it means the grapes were grown within the boundaries of one of the original appellations, many of which have since expanded to include other vineyards. Wines labeled as “Classico” are often some of the best wines in the area, and the vineyards are often at higher elevation than other vineyards

  • Located in the foothills of the Apennine Mountains between the cities of Pisa, Florence, and Siena, Chianti Classico’s altitude provides a moderating influence to the hot climate of Central Italy

  • Rocca delle Macìe totals 600 hectares (1,500 acres) across six estates in Tuscany
  • Vinification is obtained through maceration of the must (with the skins) for 12-14 days with short and frequent “pumping over” to extract color
  • On completion of the alcoholic and malolactic fermentation the wine undergoes maturation in oak barrels for at least 6 months

Alcohol:  13.5%

Pairs With: Spaghetti & meatballs, pizza margherita, roast beef

Reviews (91): Elegant and decadent in the glass with notes of dried red flowers, chopped sweet almond and white chocolate. Warm and enveloping the aroma is full on the palate with ripe sweet tannins and a precise and slightly bitter finish at the moment.  Raffaele Vecchione 2/17/20
