John's Notes

The Nobilo Icon Sauv Blanc 2018 is WineJug’s best-selling wine to date. It was so good, I received bunches of requests to feature the 2019 vintage (including from my wife).  You guessed it, I’m featuring the 2019 vintage

There’s no doubt – the 2019 is just as refreshing and delicious as the 2018. It’s rich and energetic with bright acidity, fresh fruit, and great balance, but has slightly less alcohol at 12.0%.  Very light and refreshing.  Great to enjoy on a warm summer night!

Nerdy Details

Winemaker:  Nobilo Wines

  • Icon is the flagship of Nobilo Wines, one of New Zealand’s pioneer estates, established by the Nobilo family in 1943 when Nikola Nobilo’s Croation family landed in New Zealand

Variety:  100% Sauvignon Blanc

Region:  Awatare Valley and Wairau Valley of Marlborough, New Zealand

  • The Awatare Valley has a maritime climate that is drier, cooler, and windier than the Wairau Valley which leads to higher acidity and herbaceous character
  • The Awatere vineyards provide flinty minerality and herbal notes, while the Wairau vineyards produce a rich, mouth-filling palate weight. The Rapaura fruit provides lifted, thiol-driven top notes of passion fruit, citrus zest, and tropical aromas, while the Southern Valley’s cool soils bring intense, juicy fruit flavor

  • This region is characterized by well-draining, predominantly stony soils that prevent waterlogging from the plentiful rainfall during the growing season
  • The fruit, selected from cool maritime vineyards throughout the Marlborough growing region, creates a wine that’s balanced with tropical and citrus fruit flavors that are fresh, crisp, and vibrant

  • The grapes were harvested at night when temperatures are cool to preserve their vibrant fruit flavors, destemmed, and then pressed immediately with minimal skin contact into stainless steel tanks
  • A long, slow fermentation was carried out over three weeks at cool temperatures using various yeast strains to lend complexity, enhance fruit expression, and maintain the classic Marlborough character
  • Each vineyard block was kept separate throughout the various stages of the winemaking process, allowing different parcels to blend into Nobilo’s signature style

Alcohol: 12.0%

Residual Sugar:  3.9 g/L

Pairs Well With:  Lemon herb chicken, summer salads, or lighter seafood dishes

The 2019 vintage was just released, and as such, there aren’t any published reviews at this point. 2018 reviews are below

  • Wine Enthusiast (91): Despite a tough vintage, this wine is showing all the hallmarks of classic Marlborough Sauvignon.  Aromas and flavors of snow peas, tropical and citrus fruits and touches of salty oyster shell are ensconced in a creamy texture and deftly balanced by citrusy acidity.  Christina Pickard, November 1, 2019
  • #74 Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Wines of 2019
  • Wine Spectator (89): Shows good intensity to the peach, citrus and Key lime flavors on a bright, fresh frame. Appealing for the focus and long finish
