Winemaker's Notes

The Riesling vines find perfect conditions on the steep slopes creating a perfect angle to the sun rays. The soil consists of beautiful blue, highly decomposed slate rocks, that give the wines their great minerality, leading to an appealing somewhat salty finish

John's Notes

Enticing aromas of lemon zest, ripe peach, lime, white flowers, and minerality jump from the glass as prelude to a semi-sweet palate loaded with juicy lemon, honey, fresh Jersey peach, wet stone, and lime rind, coupled with streaks of pineapple and mango all balanced by a bright acidity. Yum!

Nerdy Details

Winemaker: Nik Weis, St. Urbans-Hof

  • The Riesling winery Nik Weis – St. Urbans-Hof in Leiwen on the Moselle is run by Nik Weis and his family in the third generation. Named after the patron saint of winemaking, St. Urban, the Urban Riesling from Nik Weis offers a high quality wine at an affordable price
  • The winery has been a member of the renowned Association of German Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) since 2000

Variety: 100% Riesling from a diverse clonal selection

Region:  Mosel Valley, Germany

  • Mosel has a cool continental climate with an average growing season temperature of 62°F or below, and large temperature swings from one season to the next. Autumn generally brings less rain which creates a long, cool ripening period that allows the grapes to reach sugar ripeness while retaining their bright acidity

  • The vines that produce the fruit are from a neighboring town to the St.-Urbans-Hof estate town of Leiwen called Mehring
  • Here farmers carefully grow Riesling on blue-slate soil vineyards of moderate steepness and low yields and the wine is vinified in a modern winery to the specification of Nik Weis to capture the true “Mosel Style” of Riesling where juicy fruit, vibrant acidity, and savory minerality are combined in complete harmony and balance
  • The approximately 45 hectares of vineyards extend for around 60 km along the rivers Mosel and Saar and are cultivated in a traditional way in harmony with nature

  • The Riesling is gently crushed then left to rest in the press for a short time to allow the components locked in the berries’ skins to be extracted by contact with the juice
  • The grapes are then pneumatically pressed, and drained by gravity into stainless steel tanks located immediately below the presses. The juice rests overnight to allow the sediment to settle. Later the clear juice will be racked into other tanks
  • The wines are fermented exclusively with natural yeasts
  • Careful control of the temperature and constant monitoring of the fermentation are carried out until the wine’s fermentation is stopped via chilling the must and a light filtration

Alcohol:  10.0%

Pairs Well With: Fish, poultry and pasta dishes especially those with hot and spicy seasoning

Wine Enthusiast (89): Notes of pine frond and mint lend a cooling, vital freshness to this feather-light Riesling. Off dry in style, it’s a pristine, lemony sip that finishes long on a delicately earthen tone. Best now–2023.  Anna Lee C. IIjima 4/1/21
