Winemaker's Notes

The 2018 Truchard Chardonnay is a beautiful marriage of youthful vibrance and refined elegance. Gorgeous aromas of tropical fruits, citrus and wet stone leap from the glass with the very first swirl. The same tropical and citrus notes follow on the palate, with pear, peach blossoms, and a touch of spice to round out the flavor profile. This wine is weighty, with an oily-textured component that is inherent to the vineyard. A harmonious mix of acidity and volume, this wine is full and fresh

John's Notes

Those who know me can tell you that while I love trying wine from different producers and different parts of the world, I can’t help but come back to my favorites over and over again. If you ask my kids and wife, they’ll tell you that it not only applies to wine and food, but clothes as well?!!

With that knowledge in hand, it should be no surprise that I’m featuring another bottle from Nickel & Nickel. They’re definitely one of my favorite winemakers

Nerdy Details

Winemaker:Nickel & Nickel

  • At Nickel & Nickel, we take every effort to steward our resources and contribute to the environmental well-being of our community via sustainable practices. We:
    • Are solar powered, net-zero users of electricity, annually producing more energy than we consume
    • Organically farm our Napa Valley vineyards
    • Collect process water from winery operations for vineyard irrigation and frost protection
    • Replaced conventional company cars with hybrid-engine vehicles
    • Recycle extensively

Variety:  100% Chardonnay

  • Clones: 4, 76, 95 and 96 on four rootstocks (St. George, 110R, 3309C, 101-14)

Region: Los Carneros, Napa Valley

Climate:

  • The Vaca Mountains run along the eastern side of Napa Valley, while the Mayacamas Mountains run along the west and form a boundary with Sonoma County. Accordingly, Napa County has a range of climates and is subject to cooling influences including morning fogs, afternoon breezes, and various altitudes
  • Los Carneros is at the southern tip of the Napa Valley, and extends into Sonoma County. Because of its relatively cool temperatures, high quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive here
  • The 2018 growing season was slow and steady. The vines started to grow in late February. Spring was mild, which allowed extended flowering, resulting in uniform, well balanced clusters

Viticulture:

  • Truchard Vineyard lies in the heart of Carneros, prized for its rolling hills, sun exposure and cool, breezy conditions that allow long, even ripening. Nickel & Nickel makes wine from eight select sections of this 270-acre vineyard, composed of volcanic ash and rock with a southwestern exposure
  • This vineyard is predominately a neutral, gravelly loam from the Felton soil series, which are well-drained soils formed from weathered sandstone and shale
  • Head-trained trellising is utilized for this vineyard
  • Harvest for the Truchard vineyard occurred from September 25 – October 8, 2018

Winemaking:

  • The grapes were whole cluster pressed and barrel fermented with no malolactic fermentation
  • Aging (10 months) took place in French oak barrels (47% new, 53% once-used)

Alcohol: 14.2%

Pairs Well With: Fettucine Alfredo with shrimp, butter seared scallops, lobster ravioli in cream sauce

Reviews

Wilfred Wong (92): The 2018 Nickel & Nickel Truchard Vineyard Chardonnay is beautiful and refined. This wine offers generous ripe fruit, yet stays fresh and lively in the finish. Its aromas and flavors of stone fruit and peach fuzz should pair nicely with shellfish in decadent cream sauces.  September 5, 2019
