Winemaker's Notes

Luxurious and silky with vibrant plum notes accented by hints of cedar and sage, the 2017 Nickel & Nickel Bear Flat Vineyard Merlot is one of our most exciting single-vineyard Merlot vintages to date. Layers of dark, juicy fruit and spice flavors are supported by supple tannins and subtle toasted oak notes. The wine is both powerful and elegant, with a lingering finish that lasts

John's Notes

Established in 1997 by the partners of Far Niente, Nickel & Nickel is based on a philosophy of producing 100 percent varietal, single-vineyard wines that best express the distinct personality of each vineyard.  If you’ve never had a bottle from Nickel & Nickel, I highly recommend you give one a try.  Consistently well made, great balance, and layers of flavor.  Quite delicious

On a separate note, in an attempt to get low per unit pricing, WineJug purchased too many WJ bottle openers. WAY too many.  Like hundreds too many.  So many that we lowered the price to $4.99.  Can’t beat it

Variety: 100% Merlot

Region: Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley

Climate:  The Vaca Mountains run along the eastern side of Napa Valley, while the Mayacamas Mountains run along the west and form a boundary with Sonoma County.  Accordingly, Napa County has a range of climates and is subject to cooling influences including morning fogs, afternoon breezes, and various altitudes

Viticulture/Winemaking:

  • This vineyard is located on the west side of the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. Well-drained loam soils gently slope toward the east, providing a nice exposure for the vines, while the cooler climate offers ideal ripening conditions
  • The vines in this gently sloping Oak Knoll District vineyard budded early in 2017
  • Bloom occurred in early May, and the fruit set was small and concentrated with lovely, loose clusters
  • We worked to preserve every single berry, maintaining healthy canopies, pulling leaves later in the summer and closely monitoring the fruit
  • The summer months were moderate, and the smaller crop ripened quickly
  • We night harvested the vineyard in mid-September to ensure that the fruit came into the winery cold and we were capturing the peak flavor from every berry
  • Harvest date: September 13, 2017
  • Aged for 14 months in French oak barrels (51% new, 49% once-used)

Alcohol: 15.0%

Pairs Well With:  Grilled pork chops, herb-roasted chicken, marinated lamb skewers
