Winemaker's Notes

Winemaker’s Notes: Aromas of cigar, leather, and smoked meat fill the nose with hints of toasty oak, forest floor and baking spice. Well-structured tannins support big fruit flavors of blackberry jam, black spiced cherries, ground black pepper and just a hint of rhubarb

John's Notes

I had the pleasure of tasting the Luca Laborde Double Select as part of a socially distanced Syrah flight with 2 good friends yesterday, a doctor and a chef – huge props to each for their incredible talents. Thanks Lizzie and Sammy for the great night!

Earthy, wet cigar leaf, and smoky on the nose, this Syrah displayed medium-plus intensity notes of ripe blackberries, black cherry jam, and spice with fine tannins and thoughtfully interwoven threads of black tea, cocoa nibs, and cola, plus a long finish accented by smoky campfire. Really good on its own – even better with dried meats, Gouda cheese, and sharp cheddar.  Drink now

Nerdy Details

Winemaker:  Luca, Owner Laura Catena, Winemaker Alejandro Sejanovich

  • Over 50 years ago, viticulturist Luis Laborde created one of the world’s only double massal selection vineyards by taking cuttings from the Rhone valley and doing a second selection in their new home in the Uco Valley (instead of using vine clone nurseries). This technique is regaining popularity as a means to increase the individuality of a wine
  • Laura Catena is a fourth-generation winemaker who grew up in a traditional Argentine-Italian winemaking family in Mendoza. Laura splits her time between Mendoza and San Francisco, California, where she is an emergency physician, university professor and occasional tango dancer
  • Laura had the vision of creating a new breed of Argentine wines: small quantities, artisan quality, and true to their individual terroirs. A pioneer of small-grower relations in Mendoza, Laura’s incredible, limited production wines come from some of Argentina’s best fruit from low-yield, high-elevation, family-owned vineyards
  • The wines are named after her children – Luca, Dante and Nicola – and symbolize her love for her family

Variety:  Syrah

Region:  Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina

  • Defined by altitude more so than latitude, the Andes mountains shield Argentina’s wine regions from the cooling influences of the Pacific Ocean. As such, the vineyards are planted at elevations up to 2000 meters and beyond as a means to protect against the searing heat
  • Since the Andes’ rain shadow also significantly limits rainfall, irrigation is critical, and water is typically drawn from the mountain’s rivers or subterranean aquifers
  • Because of the dry climate, the vineyards have little risk from fungal disease, rot, or mildew
  • The cool nighttime temperatures in the Uco Valley help the grapes retain acidity and fresh fruit flavors

  • Average age of the vines is 41 years
  • Average elevation is 3500 feet
  • The results are the ultimate expression of rigorous vineyard management, viticultural experimentation, strict irrigation controls, skilled winemaking, and a quest for quality at any cost

  • State-of-the-art winemaking and oak aging (primarily French) elevate the wines to a quality level demanded by true wine connoisseurs
  • The grapes are aged 12 months in 50% new French & 50% second use French barrels

Alcohol: 13.5%

Pairs Well With:  Grilled or smoked meats such as beef, pork and lamb, and dishes prepared with mild cheese or wild mushrooms

Miscellaneous:  The background of the label is the McDermott coat of arms of Laura Catena’s American husband, Daniel McDermott

James Suckling (94): Spice, blackberry and tea aromas follow through a full body, layered texture and beautiful finish.  Shows bark, old vine character.  June 2017

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (90): The faintly leafy 2015 Laborde Double Select Syrah is produced from a close to 70-year-old vineyard in the lower part of La Consulta. It has contained ripeness, with a mixture of red and white fruit and nice spices. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and good acidity

Wine Enthusiast (89): Cool black-fruit aromas come with notes of root beer and cola. This Syrah is distinctly jammy on the palate, with scraping tannins. Blackberry and black-currant flavors have a wildness about them, while the wine feels grating on a chocolaty-tasting finish.  Michael Schachner, May 2018
