John's Notes

I have to admit, after tasting the Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages 2019 for WineJug’s write-up, I bought several bottles for my personal consumption.  It was that good, and just right for this time of year – lively, fresh, and full of bright red fruits including red cherry, strawberry, red plum, and hints of raspberry.  Quite delicious

Nerdy Details

Winemaker: Louis Jadot, winemaker Frederic Barnier

  • Founded in 1859, the house now owns 528 acres of vineyards, including 280 acres of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru plots
  • In February of 1985, the négociant firm of Maison Louis Jadot was purchased by the owners of Kobrand Corporation, sole United States importer of Jadot Burgundies since 1945

Variety:  100% Gamay

Region: Beaujolais-Villages, Burgundy, France

Climate/Vintage:

  • The 2019 vintage was very healthy and quality should be high, a tricky flowering period and hot summer weather have conspired to lower the crop substantially compared to last year. Volumes may be down as much as 30 – 40% in some areas and affects both white and red crops. The year began with a fairly mild winter, and May was very wet. There was some frost in early April but damage was not too extensive overall. June also got off to a cool start which led to an uneven flowering with shatter being a factor in places. The rest of the year was “ideal” but there was next to no rain during the summer months which, on the one hand, has led to superbly concentrated grapes but, on the other, a drastic reduction in volumes

Viticulture/Winemaking:

  • Grapes are sourced from the finest vineyards within the Beaujolais-Villages appellation in northern Beaujolais
  • Louis Jadot practices the quality-driven “replis” method, whereby grapes of higher classifications from the 10 famed Beaujolais Cru villages are added to elevate the blend
  • The area’s granite and sandy subsoils contain a high percentage of manganese, which produces an especially deep and rich expression of Gamay
  • Grapes are handpicked in whole bunches and traditional Burgundian methods are used for vinification
  • Extended maceration ensures maximum extraction of color and tannins
  • Aging: Stainless steel tank

Alcohol:  13.0%

pH:  3.61

Pairs Well With: Hors d’oeuvres, mild cheeses, poultry dishes

Reviews

Wine Enthusiast (91): This dense and fruity wine was made by Burgundy negociant Louis Jadot. Rich cherry fruits have a balance between dry tannins and juicy fruitiness. Drink this ripe wine now.  Roger Voss 3/1/21

Blue Lifestyle (90): Bright ruby color, silky, tangy and juicy with crisp red cherry fruit and a structured finish. Anthony Dias Blue 7/27/20

Wine Advocate (89): Bursting with aromas of plums, cherries and strawberries, the 2019 Beaujolais-Villages (Maison Louis Jadot) is medium to full-bodied, juicy and succulent, with a fleshy core of fruit, ripe but racy acids and velvety tannins. A wine that will appeal to purists and novices alike, this is a quintessentially charming Beaujolais-Villages from what is shaping up to be a very fine vintage. William Kelley 10/15/20
