Winemaker's Notes

Our Cabernet Sauvignon has flavors of blackberry and tobacco which are common characteristics of Cab Sauv.  We elevate this wine by blending in a touch of Petite Sirah that really rounds out the finish and brings flavors of spice, clove, and pepper.  This rich wine is perfect to pair with steak and pastas with red sauce

John's Notes

Another bottle from my tasting this past Friday, Imagery’s Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 opens with notes of ripe blackberry, blueberry pie, and purple plum supported by mocha and cigar box spice.  Decanting for 30 – 45 minutes added to its balance

Nerdy Details

Winemaker: Imagery Estate Winery, winemaker Jamie Benziger

  • Joe Benziger founded Imagery in the early 1980’s to follow his curiosity (and great taste), crafting wines that didn’t fit into any conventional mold
  • Growing up, Joe’s middle daughter, Jamie was surrounded by her dad’s love of lesser known varietals. Working alongside Joe, as a young winemaker Jamie absorbed his spirit of adventure and some of his boundless energy. Together, they’ve created our new collection of Imagery wines, blending the spirit of our Sonoma estate with today’s most popular varietals
  • Each of Imagery’s new California tier of wines takes a traditional varietal and adds a little twist – something unexpected, something out of the ordinary, something very Imagery
  • In December 2017, Joe retired and Jamie took the reins as Winemaker. Not only was she named the 2019 Best Woman Winemaker in the International Women’s Wine Competition, she was also included on Wine Enthusiast’s list of 40 Under 40 Tastemakers

Variety: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petite Sirah

Region: Sonoma County, California

Climate/Vintage:

  • Climate in California is less about latitude and more about the extent to which various cooling influences affect the vineyards.  In Sonoma, diverse microclimates range from cool, foggy conditions, to warmer hillside climates above the fog layer.  Rocky soils, resulting from ancient volcanic activity, stress the vines, resulting in smaller berries of intense flavor

Viticulture:

  • In the Northernmost region of Sonoma County is a region called Pine Mountain – Cloverdale Peak. This area on the northern flank of the Mayacamas Mountains only officially gained AVA recognition in 2011, but has been home to viticulture back to its earliest settlement in the mid-1800s
  • Our Upper Ridge Vineyard is located at the top of Pine Mountain at one of the highest elevations in Sonoma County

Alcohol:  13.5%

pH:  3.64

Pairs Well With: Steak, pastas with red sauce, cured meats

Reviews

Reviews for the 2019 vintage aren’t published to this point, but the 2018 received the below accolades:

Tasting Panel (92) – 2018 Vintage: Rich with aromas of dark chocolate, slate, cedar, and coffee, this youthful Cab is sassy and light on its feet, with notes of spiced blueberries and round, mocha-kissed tannins. Rhubarb and fennel come in mid-palate and stay to the finish
