The bright tropical and floral aromas along with the juicy sweet citrus flavors and big lush mouthfeel of this 2018 Sauvignon Blanc will be an excellent complement to fish tacos topped with mango salsa. It also pairs beautifully with warm afternoons sitting by the pool

John's Notes

Groth consistently produces top quality wine. Case in point, rating firms have scored Groth’s Sauvignon Blanc 90 points or better for 5 years running – quite impressive!  And I love that the Tasting Panel described the 2018 vintage as “almost spiritual in nature”

Winemaker:  Groth Vineyards

  • Dennis and Judy Groth made a life-changing investment in 1981 when they bought a vineyard on Oakville Cross Road, in the heart of Napa Valley, with hopes it would produce wines as special as their favorites from the region
  • Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate gave the Groth 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon the distinction of being California’s first 100-point wine
  • Groth sustainably farms 165 acres of estate vineyards with the dual goals of producing the highest-quality, most elegant wines we can while caring for our estate for future generations

Variety: 86% Sauvignon Blanc, 14% Semillon

Region: Oakville, Napa Valley, CA

  • Long late and mild sums up the 2018 vintage. We started out with a cooler spring and slightly later than average bud break, but the conditions after budbreak were quite pleasant – very little frost threat this year. Those warm and mild conditions held throughout the growing season, we did have a handful of 100+ days, but not more than normal. The later bud break translated into a harvest stretched out by continued mild conditions post-veraison, giving the grapes quite a bit of hang-time for exceptional flavor development
  • The Vaca Mountains run along the eastern side of Napa Valley, while the Mayacamas Mountains run along the west and form a boundary with Sonoma County. Accordingly, Napa County has a range of climates and is subject to cooling influences including morning fogs, afternoon breezes, and various altitudes

  • Our Sauvignon Blanc is produced from grapes grown in various microclimates of the Napa Valley. The warmer areas give us grapes with melon and citrus characteristics in both aroma and flavor. The cooler areas of Napa Valley provide fruit with a solid, crisp backbone that gives the wine an exciting liveliness and balances the rich creaminess from “sur lie” aging
  • The Semillon is grown on the Groth Oakville Estate vineyard and is harvested with the Estate Sauvignon Blanc, contributing roundness and weight to the mouthfeel
  • Pick Dates September 6th – October 1st, 2018

  • All of the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon were whole-cluster pressed which gives us juice of incredibly high fruitiness and softness
  • To fully integrate the flavors as early as possible, the Estate Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon were both co-pressed and co-fermented
  • After pressing and settling, the juice was moved to neutral oak barrels (75%) and stainless-steel tanks (25%), put through a long, cool fermentation, and allowed to age “sur lie” for a total of three months in barrel
  • Malolactic fermentation was avoided to preserve the fruit
  • This pressing, combination of fermentation techniques, and aging program adds complexity to the aromas, flavors, and preserves the bright fruit and lively natural acidity that make this wine so refreshing and enjoyable

Pairs With:  Fish tacos with mango salsa, steamed clams, grilled shrimp

Tasting Panel (93): We’ve always been a fan of this Sauv Blanc, but this vintage is almost spiritual in nature. Aromatics are hedonistic with scents of perfumed grapefruit, pineapple and white flowers. Jasmine lilts on the palate that takes lift off with a graceful minerality. Blend of 86% Sauvignon Blanc and 14% Semillon, 75% barrel fermented, three months sur lie aging

Wine Enthusiast (92): With 14% Sémillon in the blend, this is a fleshy, robust white that displays tropical fruit and oak in equal measure. Rich and creamy, it appeals in tangerine, mango and Tahitian vanilla, lifted by vibrant acidity

Wilfred Wong (92): Few producers have garnered as much press coverage as Groth Vineyards & Winery in Oakville. While the Cabernets are on the big stage, the Sauvignon Blancs have gained traction amongst the fine wine folks. This wine is generous, loaded with beautiful fruit, and long in the finish. Its aromas and flavors of lovely dried herbs and piquant citrus stay long on the palate. Pair it with steamed clams over Udon noodles
