John's Notes

Lovers of Italian sparkling are probably familiar with Franciacorta, but a quick overview may be interesting

  • A small wine growing area in Lombardy (central northern Italy), Franciacorta is widely regarded as Italy’s finest sparkling wine based on its high standards for viticulture and winemaking, climate, soils, and topography
  • The soils are mixed (6 diff types) from the activity of glaciers which enables a range of expression in the base wine (think complexity)
  • It is mostly fermented and aged in stainless-steel tanks to preserve the primary fruit flavors, although a portion may be fermented and/or aged in old oak for additional complexity
  • Franciacorta’s style is predominantly Brut (80%) and most wines are Vintage, but not labeled as such given the long aging on lees requirements. The Non-Vintage blend is typically comprised of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (may have up to 50% Pinot Blanco), and must age on lees in the bottle for a minimum of 18 months
  • Like Champagne, Franciacorta is produced via the traditional method with 2nd fermentation in the bottle. Franciacorta’s production volume however is roughly 1/100th that of Champagne
  • Franciacorta is typically Very Good to Outstanding quality with Medium alcohol, M+ acidity (albeit less than Champagne), notes of ripe apple and peach, and significant biscuit notes given extended aging on lees. Generally, Franciacorta is riper/fruitier than Champagne because of its climate

Winemaker: Ferghettina

  • Ferghettina is a family winery established in 1991 by Roberto Gatti, and run with his wife Andreina, and their children Laura and Matteo
  • Starting with just 3-4ha of vineyard and a small production of Franciacorta Brut, Ferghettina has now grown to become one of the finest Franciacorta wineries
  • Ferghettina are now in the process of organic conversion

Variety: Franciacorta, Brut (95% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Noir)

Region: Lombardy, Italy

Climate:  Located in the foothills of the Alps, Northern Italy’s vineyards are largely sheltered from northern winds and rain, and have a moderate climate with dry, short summers and long, cold winters

  • Situated in the southern half of Lombardy – on the edge of the town of Adro, just south of Lake Iseo – the majority of plantings are Chardonnay (approx. 70%) along with Pinot Noir (and just 4ha Pinot Blanc for their still wines)
  • They now have 200ha of vineyard across 11 different villages, mostly at 250-300m altitude
  • Each vineyard confers a unique character on the resulting base wine, giving Roberto a broad spectrum of styles to blend for each cuveé

  • The alcoholic fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tank at controlled temperature between 16 and 18°C (61 – 64°F) with selected yeast
  • Tirage is done in spring time of the following year
  • The wine spends 24 month ageing on the lees
  • At disgorgement 7 g/L of sugar is added

Alcohol: 12.5%

Pairs Well With: Linguine with shrimp, fried fish or mussels, pizza with white sauce

Wine Enthusiast (90): Enticing aromas of pressed wild flower, chamomile and white stone fruit lead the nose. The bright palate delivers ripe yellow apple, white peach and dried herb alongside an elegant, lively perlage. A lemon-drop note gives it a tangy finish.  Kerin O’Keefe
