Winemaker's Notes

Floral raspberry and vanilla aromas and user-friendly watermelon, cherry and spice flavor

John's Notes

Beautiful pink-orange in color, Cline’s Ancient Vines Mourvèdre Rosé 2019 is bursting with aromas of fresh strawberry, watermelon, and tart red cherry with a spritz of lime. The palate is equally bright and enjoyable, the finish is protracted and crisp, and the fruit notes are balanced well by a lively acidity.  Quite nice

Nerdy Details

Winemaker: Cline Family Cellars, winemaker Charlie Tsegeletos

  • Cline Family Cellars is a family-owned and operated winery founded by Fred and Nancy Cline in 1982 in Oakley, CA. The winery facilities were relocated in 1991 to the Sonoma Valley, on a 350-acre estate in the Carneros district
  • The Cline winery and vineyards are built on a foundation of deeply rooted respect for the land and love of winemaking
  • Instead of using herbicides to kill weeds between the rows, Cline either hand-hoes or brings in sheep and goats to eat the weeds and deposit “their own little fertilizer”

Variety: 86% Mourvèdre, 14% Zinfandel

Region: Contra Costa County, California

  • Located directly east of San Francisco Bay and immediately north of Livermore Valley, Contra Costa County has a climate of hot days and cool nights.  It’s deep, free-draining, sandy soils offer little resistance to wandering root systems which, coupled with the lack of water, restrict yield and produce small, concentrated berries with thick skins

  • Mourvèdre grapes for this Rosé come from our Oakley vineyards in Contra Costa County
  • These vines grow in the deep sandy soil along the delta of the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers. Cool winds blow off the water and allow the grapes to hold their bright acidity
  • The combination of low average rainfall and fast-draining soil in the region limits the production of the vines, resulting in a scant but intensely flavored crop
  • Harvest dates: August 22 – 28, 2019

  • Our Mourvèdre Rosé is made as a Blanc de Noir or “white of a red grape,” in the style of a white wine
  • The skins were gently crushed and pressed, extracting a small amount of color and tannin. The juice was then fermented slowly at cold temperatures to preserve the bright fruit flavors

Wilfred Wong (89): The 2019 Cline Ancient Vines Mourvèdre Rosé is bight, delicious, and crisp. This wine sports aromas and flavors of dried strawberries and tart cherries. Pair this with seared scallops in a lightly-spiced wine reduction sauce. August 27, 2020

Wine Enthusiast (89): Light notes of mint and strawberry give this medium-bodied wine a charming, delicate effect. It’s crisp and clean and appetizing. Best Buy.  Jim Gordon 11/1/20
