Description

Chateau Gravas is a classic Sauternes made from 100% Semillon, and is bursting with notes of sweet apricot, honey, cinnamon and hints of ginger.  Great by itself or try it with a piece of chocolate cake!

Variety: Sauternes
Region: Bordeaux, France
Winemaker: Chateau Gravas
Size: 375 ml
Alcohol: 14.2%

Winemaker's Notes

The wine shows a lovely pale golden color with deep golden highlights. Round and well-balanced offering complex aromas of candied fruits backed up by a hint of exotic fruit (mango, guava) and white flowers. On the palate, it is ample and fleshy, leading into a silky and long finish

John's Notes

Medium intensity notes of apricot, ripe peach, white flowers, honey, sour cream, and a touch of ginger elevate from the glass. The palate is decadently sweet balanced by just enough acidity, and delivers concentrated notes of honey, lemon-drop, apricot, mango, and peach cobbler with that “wet wood” characteristic that is unmistakably botrytis (aka noble rot).  The finish is long and enjoyable.  Please note this is a 375ml bottle

Nerdy Details

Winemaker: Chateau Gravas, winemaker Michel Bernard

  • Chateau Gravas is a family owned and operated winery, managed by husband and wife Michel and Florence Bernard
  • Founded in 1850, the estate is superbly located in Barsac, between Château Coutet, Château Climens and Château Doisy-Daëne
  • Six generations of Claverie and Bernard families have succeeded each other on the Gravas estate. They still have a beautiful stone press from the year 1900
  • For several decades, the Gravas vineyard remained a modest 1 hectare vineyard, before reaching its current area of around 8 hectares in 1930
  • The quality of wines is built on small business size and quality of a highly calcareous soil

Variety: 100% Semillon

Region:  Barsac, Sauternes AOC, Bordeaux, France

Climate/Vintage:

  • Bordeaux’s moderate maritime climate benefits from warming Atlantic currents which extend the growing season, but also bring rainfall and humidity
  • Generally, maritime climates have a low annual difference between the hottest and coldest months of the year with moderate temperatures
  • Moderate temperatures generally translate to an average growing season temperature of 16.5° – 18.5°C (62° – 65°F)

Viticulture:

  • The name “Gravas” comes from “graves”, a gravelly soil (mixed with clay, sand and limestone) that perfectly suits the production of Sauternes wines
  • The 60 year-old vines are harvested by hand, and the grapes are picked in successive passes to select grapes affected by Noble Rot at just the right moment

Winemaking:

  • Fermented in stainless steel tanks
  • The Sauternes of Chateau Gravas is aged for 18 months in French and American oak barrels before being bottled

Alcohol:  14.2%

Pairs Well With: Blue cheese, chocolate cake, frosted peach pastries

Reviews

xtraWine (93): Bright gold yellow in appearance.  The nose is of good elegance and expresses itself on notes of ripe exotic fruit and light spice.  Well balanced between sugary and acid notes, with aromas of candied citrus as the main expression. Good persistence
