Nerdy Details

Winemaker: Champs de Provence, winemaker Caroline Moro

  • The Prestige Wine & Spirits Group launched Champs de Provence in February 2016 marking its introduction into this category

Variety: 55% Grenache, 25% Cinsault, 20% Syrah and Rolle

Region: Cotes de Provence AOC, France

Climate/Vintage:

  • Provence generally has a warm Mediterranean climate, adequate rainfall (mostly occurring in winter months), and cooling influence from the powerful Mistral wind. Those windy, dry growing season conditions significantly reduce fungal disease risk thus making Provence a large producer of organic grapes/wines

Viticulture:

  • The grapes are sourced from vineyards from the villages of Trets, Peynier and Pourriéres, just south of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire (made famous by a series of oil paints by the French artist, Paul Cézanne)
  • The mountains help to protect the vineyards from the very strong Mistral wind which will help to protect the vines from disease. As a result the wines from the Côtes de Provence region are considered to be some of the most natural in France
  • Soil: Limestone, clay and sandstone
  • The grapes are harvested by hand during the night to maintain freshness

Winemaking:

  • Once the grapes are pressed, the must is cold stabilized for 5 to 6 days before fermentation in stainless tanks at a controlled temperature (61°F)
  • The grape varieties are vinified separately. The fermentation takes place over 15 days
  • The wines are aged on fine lees for several weeks before being blended

Alcohol:  13.0%

RS:  0.5 g/L

pH:  3.50

Pairs Well With:  Barbecued chicken, fresh fruit plate, soft cheeses

Reviews

Beverage Dynamics, The Best Rosé Wines to Drink in 2021 (89 points): A traditional French rosé with a heftier body than would be expected. Berry fruit and citrus are intertwined throughout the elegant-tasting experience. A must-have for a warm up to a dinner.  2/3/21
