Winemaker's Notes

The 2018 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon features both richness and freshness coming together in an intriguing way. Fruit is luscious, and integrated wood complements rather than defines the wine. Scents of cassis, blackberries and pomace fresh off the skins. The palate starts off broad and sleek, then broods with luxurious tannins expanding to a fine textural impression. Ripeness abounds with youthful vibrancy – fruit-driven as Caymus is known, with overlay of French oak on the finish

John's Notes

A friend closes each of his emails with “Wine! What are you saving it for?” And he couldn’t be more right. If I’ve learned nothing else with age, its that life is meant to be enjoyed.  Too often we save our best bottles; age-worth, expensive, and/or high quality wine for that “special occasion”.  For my money, a nice night with family and friends is that special occasion – life is way too short to wait.  Thanks Alex S.

Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 checks all the right boxes – delicious now, age-worthy, high quality wine. Enjoy a bottle with those that are special to you

Nerdy Details

Winemaker: Caymus Vineyards, winemaker Chuck Wagner

  • In 1972, Chuck Wagner started Caymus Vineyards with his parents, a humble plan and an uncharted future
  • The 2018 vintage honors our founders Charlie and Lorna Wagner who produced our first Napa Valley Cabernet 46 years ago. The back label is a picture of them shortly after their wedding in 1934

Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon

Region: Napa Valley, California

  • The Vaca Mountains run along the eastern side of Napa Valley, while the Mayacamas Mountains run along the west and form a boundary with Sonoma County. Accordingly, Napa County has a range of climates and is subject to cooling influences including morning fogs, afternoon breezes, and various altitudes

  • We farm Cabernet grapes in eight of Napa’s 16 sub-appellations, with diversification enabling us to make the best possible wine in a given year
  • Roughly 25% of the grapes come from hillside sites, and 75% of the grapes come from the Napa Valley floor. We have found that the dark, solid core and backbone of the hillside grapes blends perfectly with the supple qualities of those from the valley floor
  • Crop thinning, allowing measured sunlight to reach the vine’s fruit zone, and waiting for increased ripeness are all part of our viticultural practices
  • Caymus Cabernet has aromas and flavors which can only be achieved through “hang time” – a technique which chances the loss of crop if early winter sets in. Leaving the fruit to “hang” on the vine unusually long develops suppleness, increases color, and matures the tannins of the grapes

Alcohol: 13.9%

Pairs Well With:  Filet Mignon, Wagyu beef, sharp aged cheddar

Wilfred Wong (90): The 2018 Caymus Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon drinks easily. This wine is ripe, smooth, and delectable. Enjoy its lovely aromas and flavors of ripe fruit and oak with a well-seasoned roast leg of lamb. November 25, 2019
