Winemaker's Notes

This classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon reveals aromas of ripe blackberry and boysenberry with hints of dark chocolate and sweet oak. On the palate, the dark fruit is balanced by fresh acidity and lush tannins that carry all the way over a lingering, elegant finish – with just a kiss of minerality.  Enjoy this wine now or lay the wine down and watch it continue to develop complexity in the bottle for years to come

John's Notes

Steeped in the tradition of consistently producing delicious wine, Cakebread’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 needs no introduction from me – it’s always an enjoyable bottle

I wanted to give a special thanks to the Weirton Rotary for the chance to speak at their 3/12 luncheon (see the article at Great folks doing great work to support the community and its small businesses.  If you haven’t stopped by WineJug’s retail store, we’re located at 1136 Pennsylvania Avenue, Weirton.  I’d love to talk wine with you!

  • The 2018 growing season was a dream come true. Early spring rains replenished the soils, clusters ripened evenly over a long, slow summer with no heat spikes, and grapes reached full maturity right on time. Yields at harvest were abundant and of very high quality

  • At Cakebread Cellars, we embrace environmental responsibility with green practices that range from sustainable and organic farming and diligent water/energy conservation to extensive recycling operations (nearly 90% of winery-generated waste). We are proud to have been an early industry leader in these efforts
  • Diverse soils and microclimates express their distinct personalities through remarkable wines. We blend our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from special spots throughout the region:
  • The renowned cabernet sauvignon appellations of Rutherford and Oakville impart classic Napa Valley bold fruit intensity, while the warmer Calistoga area to the north, and the cooler southern reaches of the Suscol watershed contribute layers of complexity and depth of flavor
  • On volcanic rocky hillsides, grapes undergo a beneficial struggle that results in intense fruit, firm tannins and distinctive minerality, while in the deep, well-drained soils of the valley floor, grapes develop ripe black fruit concentration, balanced acidity and supple tannins
  • We harvested grapes during the cool night hours to ensure the fruit retained freshness, purity, and natural acidity. Harvest Dates: September 22 – October 10, 2018

  • Clusters were hand-sorted and destemmed, then whole berries were also hand-sorted
  • Partial crush gave us optimum extraction of color, flavor, and tannin from the grape skins. Prior to fermentation, grapes underwent a “cold soak,” which softens the grape skins and further helps extract color and tannin
  • Following fermentation the wine was transferred to barrels for malolactic fermentation
  • The wine aged in French oak barrels (55% new) for 17 months, then our winemaker blended the diverse components to add layers of complexity to the concentrated, classic Napa Valley tapestry of flavors
  • Bottled in April, 2020

Alcohol:  14.8%

While the 2018 vintage has not yet been rated, Cakebread’s Cabernet Sauvignon receives 90+ ratings year in and year out. 2017 reviews are below:

  • Jeb Dunnuck (92) – 2017 Vintage: The base Cabernet from this terrific estate is the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, which checks in as 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. It has beautiful notes of crème de cassis, graphite, tobacco, and ground herbs as well as a dense, rich, concentrated style on the palate. This terrific Cabernet is going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and cruise for upwards of 15 years (or more) in cool cellars
  • Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (90) – 2017 Vintage: The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, aged for 17 months in 56% new French oak. Very deep purple-black colored, it has a pronounced nose of crème de cassis, blackberry tart and warm mulberries with touches of Chinese five spice, camphor and tar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate features loads of black fruit preserves, framed by chewy tannins and great freshness, finishing with a compelling herbal lift
