  • Pruning leaves from the “shade side” of the vine is particularly important to prevent disease, ensure proper ripening, and avoid overpowering green/herbal flavors
  • Shannon Ridge utilizes a flock of roughly 1500 sheep to remove that excess leaf canopy, clean the vineyards of weeds, and reduce the need for chemicals, while providing natural fertilizer for the vines
  • Without any prodding, the sheep naturally gravitate to the shady side of the vine to perform their pruning; exactly where the pruning needs to be performed. Impressive to see

  • Shannon Ridge is a family-owned vineyard and winery located in Lake County, California
  • In 1995, owner Clay Shannon discovered a magnificent piece of property in the hills overlooking Clear Lake in Lake County, thirty-five miles north of Napa’s famed vineyards
  • Clay’s vision was simple: “We wanted to grow the best fruit in the world,” says Clay, “but we wanted to do it in a way that made us happy living there”

Climate/Vintage:

  • 2018 was the longest vintage ever! Our first grapes came in on August 21st and our last grapes came in on November 16th.  However, slow and steady wins the race.  A long, mild temperature vintage always makes for the most complex wine because the grapes can slowly ripen.  We call it hang time.  We haven’t seen wines this dense and concentrated in a few vintages

Viticulture:

  • Perched on ridges of lean volcanic soils at altitudes of 2,100 to 2,400 feet above sea level, this wild land is cooled by steady winds off Clear Lake and from the higher peaks just to the north
  • Our vineyards are certified sustainably farmed thus producing the finest fruit possible. For Clay Shannon, sustainability wasn’t some philosophical concept; it is the way we live our lives
  • At Shannon Ridge, we live in harmony with mother nature. Our sustainability practices integrate a flock of roughly 1500 sheep that clean the vineyards, remove the excess canopy, and reduce the need for chemicals, while providing natural fertilizer.  The vineyards feed the sheep, the sheep feed the vines; lamb feeds the people, people drink the wine and wear wool

Winemaking:

  • A warm fermentation brings out the fruit character of Cabernet Sauvignon, so we fermented at 90°F
  • After pressing, we age it in American oak to balance the structure and fruity notes of Cabernet grown in the woodsy Lake County air

Alcohol:  15.2%

Wine Enthusiast (88): Lush, dark and saturated with flavor, this velvety textured wine is practically syrupy in its degree of concentration and ripeness. Full body and moderate tannins give it a good grip on the palate. Jim Gordon 12/31/20
