John's Notes

A customer recently asked “What is a Super Tuscan?”

I’m a big fan of Super Tuscans, so it was an easy answer. Did you know …

  • Led by houses such as Sassicaia, and Ornellaia, Super Tuscans emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and gained incredible popularity in the 80s and 90s
  • Super Tuscans are red wines from Tuscany that may include non-indigenous, international grapes such as Merlot, Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, and Syrah in addition to (or instead of) Sangiovese
  • With a mindset of appealing to an international market, Super Tuscans are deep in color, fruity, and generally have vanilla and sweet spice notes from aging in new/small French oak barriques (vs. large Slovonian casks)
  • The Toscana IGT was formed in 1992

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (93): The Castello Banfi 2015 Cum Laude is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese and Syrah that delivers ample dark fruit intensity, rich succulence, structure and lasting fruit flavors. This wine is versatile and strong, with powerful fruit fiber and a full-bodied approach that would pair with pork or beef roast with baked potatoes marinated with garlic and rosemary

James Suckling (92): The currant, violet and berry aromas come through clearly here. Full-bodied, layered and rich with plenty of ripe tannins and a flavorful finish
