Winemaker's Notes

This vintage shows great color, with a dark purple, red hue. There are spicy, earthy aromas of dark fruits, black cherry, black pepper, plum, and raspberry along with a touch of citrus

John's Notes

After almost 10 days away from “the office”, I’m back from vacation and ready to start writing about wine again!

I’m always a fan of a big Zin, but I especially appreciate the mix of juicy red and black fruits complemented by a natural affinity for oak that seems to bring out an array of baking spices from each barrel. Enjoy

Nerdy Details

Winemaker: Alexander Valley Vineyards

  • Early on we grew Zinfandel and sold the grapes to other wineries. In 1978 Hank Wetzel noticed some Zinfandel grapes on our hillside vines that ripened well after the pickers had finished. Frugal winemaker that he was, he mentioned this “free” crop one evening to the rest of the family
  • The family picked the grapes, crushed, fermented and aged the wine in the adobe. The first vintage debuted in 1978 and was given to friends and family
  • Sin Zin quickly gained cult status among those lucky to receive a few bottles. The wine was so popular, that in 1980 we produced 1,000 cases of Sin Zin

Variety: 100% Zinfandel

Region: Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, California

  • Overall, 2017 was a vintage of contrasts. The ample rainfall in January and February allayed any talk of drought, but winter rains were followed by a warm spring and heat spikes throughout the summer

  • For the 2017 vintage, we harvested Zinfandel from eight vineyards in the southern Alexander Valley
  • Harvest: September 3 – 21, 2017
  • Each lot was de-stemmed, fermented separately, and then aged in 25% new American oak barrels for 14 months

Alcohol:  14.9%

pH:  3.85

Pairs Well With:  Roasted poultry, braised short ribs, tomato based Italian dishes

Reviews (86): Dark dusty garnet color. Aromas and flavors of pickled cranberry, sour cherries, raspberry, honey roasted pine nuts, and wild mint with a velvety, vibrant, medium-to-full body and a warming, complex, long finish with touches of candied yams and crystallized ginger with light oak flavor. Fruity, juicy Zinfandel that plays all the notes.  10/14/20
